Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah said Monday he was prepared to pull his forces from Iraq, after the Islamic State group lost control over its last urban stronghold in the country. In a televised address on Monday evening, Nasrallah said the Lebanese movement had deployed "large numbers of our commanders and cadres" to Iraq to fight IS. Once that official declaration came, Hezbollah would reassess its presence in Iraq and may pull its members out.

Iran is not seeking to "dominate" the Middle East, President Hassan Rouhani told his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday, according to the Iranian presidency. "Our presence in Iraq and Syria is at the invitation of the governments of those countries to fight terrorism," Rouhani was quoted as saying in a telephone call with Macron. Rouhani said "Iran does not seek to dominate" the region, but was instead working "for peace and security and to avoid the dismembering of countries".

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani declared the end of Islamic State on Tuesday while a senior military commander thanked the "thousands of martyrs" killed in operations organized by Iran to defeat the militant group in Syria and Iraq. "Today with God's guidance and the resistance of people in the region we can say that this evil has either been lifted from the head of the people or has been reduced," Rouhani said in an address broadcast live on state TV. "Of course the remnants will continue but the foundation and roots have been destroyed." Major General Qassem Soleimani, a senior commander of the elite Revolutionary Guards, also said Islamic State had been defeated, in a message sent on Tuesday to Iran's supreme leader which was published on the Guards' news site, Sepah News.
